Résumé: There has been a lot of discussion recently about the ‘nature’ of
holobionts (communities of microorganisms in all sorts of niches, including
the human body). I doubt this is a genuine metaphysical debate. I will show
you how certain notions of holobionts came about epistemically, and how
strong community-level notions of holobionts are being undermined as
mechanistic analyses come to the fore in this research field.
